호주의 제 2의 애국가라 불리는 Waltzing Matilda를 배워봅시다.

 

경상남도교육연수원에서 실시한 2009학년도 중등영어심화직무연수 동안 여러가지를 배울 수 있었습니다. 그 중에서도  한국계  뉴질랜드인인 Danniel의 수업에서는 수업에 아주 활용하기 좋은 자료들을 접할 수 있어서 더욱 좋았습니다. 그 중 한 시간 동안 Australia의 제 2의 국가라고 불리는 Waltzing Matilda를 배웠습니다.

수업 시간에 영어권 문화에 대해 설명하면서, 아이들과 한번 같이 불러봐도 좋을 것 같습니다.

 Daniel의 수업 시간에 Waltzing Matilda를 배우기 전에, 먼저 Pronunciation : Syllables 라는 주제로 영어의 음절들과 그 음절을 정확히 찾아내고, 적합한 강세로 발음하는 연습을 해보았습니다. 책상을 치거나, 손뼉을 치면서 음절을 연습하는 수업이었는 데, 재미가 있었습니다. 그 내용은 다음에 포스팅하도록 하겠습니다.

남반구에 위치해 있고, 양털로 유명합니다. 영어를 주로 쓰며, 수도는 캔버라 입니다.
중등 영어교과서에서도 꼭 한번씩은 언급되는 나라죠.

몇가지 동영상을 찾다가, 간단한 설명까지 덧붙여주는 아저씨의 공연을 골랐습니다. 보고 있으면 노래 속에 나오는 단어들의 뜻도 일러 줍니다. (주로 Australia에서만 사용되는 단어들이죠.) 이 아저씨는 좀 노래를 빨리 부르는 편입니다. ^^ 하지만 코러스 부분은 괜찮네요.

Waltzing Matilda는 구전되는 노래이기 때문에, 완벽한 하나의 가사만 존재하는 것은 아니라고 합니다. 그렇지만, 줄거리와 내용은 같고, 후렴부가 약간 바뀌거나 하는 경우가 있습니다.

미리 알아두면 좋은 단어들

Matilda : bag/ camper bag swagman : a man who travelled the country lookig for work. billabong : small water hole, by the river coolibah tree : a kind of eucalyptus tree which grows near billabongs jumbuck : a large, difficult-to-shear sheep billy : a can for boiling water in Tucker bag : a bag for carrying foo ("tucker") troopers : policemen squatter : land owner/ farmer/ sheep owner

내용을 살펴보면,
  이리저리 떠돌던 swagman이 운좋게도 jumbuck을 잡게 됩니다. 헌데, 이녀석은 주인이 있는 놈이었습니다. 졸지에 이 swagman은 jumbuck을 훔친 도둑이 되어 버린 것이죠. 경찰과 농장주는 달려오고, swagman은 '산채로 날 잡을 순 없을거야(You'll never take me alive)'라고 말하고는 billabong으로 몸을 던집니다. 어쩌면 너무 슬픈 이야기이죠. 헌데 어차피 그 시절(1887년에 쓰여졌다고 합니다. )에 남의 것을 훔치면, 사형에 처해졌다고 하니, 이 swagman에겐 어쩜 다른 선택이 없었을 것 같기도 합니다.
